Kolkata’s Vegan Wave Grows Stronger as Restaurants, Markets and PETA Drive Plant-Based Awareness

Kolkata, a city renowned for its rich culinary traditions, is experiencing a powerful rise in vegan culture as restaurants, markets and advocacy groups push for healthier and more compassionate food choices. Once defined by fish and dairy-based delicacies, the city is steadily transforming into a vibrant hub for plant-based living.

In the last year, cafés and eateries across Park Street, Salt Lake and New Town have launched full vegan menus featuring dairy-free desserts, tofu curries, millet bowls and plant-based proteins. Coffee shops are switching to almond, oat and soy milk to meet growing demand from both ethical vegans and health-focused youth.

A major contributor to this movement is PETA India, which has been actively organising campaigns, school outreach programmes and public awareness drives across Kolkata. Their initiatives highlight the environmental and ethical benefits of plant-based diets and encourage restaurants to adopt cruelty-free menu options. PETA’s Vegan Starter Kits and city-wide outreach have helped thousands of Kolkatans explore plant-based alternatives for the first time.

Local organic stores in Gariahat, Behala and Dum Dum report rising sales of vegan cheese, mock meat, dairy-free sweets and cruelty-free cosmetics. Home-grown brands many led by women entrepreneurs are gaining popularity by offering plant-based versions of traditional Bengali dishes.

Vegan pop-up festivals, cooking workshops and sustainability events are drawing strong participation, signalling a cultural shift. Environmental groups note that the move aligns with increasing awareness around climate change, animal welfare and lifestyle diseases.

With PETA’s advocacy, expanding markets and enthusiastic consumers, Kolkata’s vegan movement is rapidly moving from niche trend to mainstream urban lifestyle.
