The University Grants Commission (UGC) is preparing to take a major step in strengthening India’s school education system under the National Mission for Mentoring (NMM). The initiative aims to create a structured network where experienced college professors, university faculty members and retired academics will mentor school teachers, helping them improve classroom delivery, subject understanding and pedagogical skills.
Under this model, UGC-approved mentors will guide school teachers through workshops, classroom observations, lesson-planning support and regular academic consultations. The goal is to bridge the gap between higher education expertise and school-level teaching practices, ensuring that students benefit from richer, more updated learning experiences.
The Mission focuses on four key areas: subject knowledge enhancement, modern teaching methods, technology integration, and continuous professional development. By involving college professors, the UGC hopes to create a pool of mentors who can offer real-time academic support and help teachers adopt a competency-based approach as recommended by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The programme is also expected to help teachers stay aligned with new-age educational demands, including activity-based learning, critical thinking, and digital tools.
Once fully implemented, the National Mission for Mentoring could significantly raise teaching standards across government and private schools, creating a stronger pipeline of well-prepared students entering higher education.
