Gen Z and the 22-Day Reality

The Silent Mental Health Crisis

In the span of just months, India has lost some of its brightest young voices each story echoing a growing, unspoken crisis.

Sachin Chandwade, a 25-year-old actor and software engineer from Jalgaon, was found dead by suicide in October 2025. Known for his appearance in Netflix’s Jamtara: Season 2 and his upcoming Marathi film Asurvan, Sachin’s death shook both the entertainment and tech worlds. Friends described him as “always smiling, yet silently battling the shadows.”

Only months earlier, social media influencer Misha Aggarwal, also 25, took her life just days before her birthday. Reports say she was battling depression, allegedly triggered by a sudden drop in her follower count a chilling reminder of how fragile digital validation has become for young creators.

In September, Anurag Anil Borkar, a 19-year-old NEET topper, ended his life despite academic brilliance. His success on paper couldn’t shield him from internal pain the quiet burden of perfection many young minds carry. And just recently, a 19-year-old girl from Navi Mumbai, full of ambition and dreams, died by suicide . Neighbors said she was “bright, helpful, and had just started living her life.” Her story barely made headlines yet it represents thousands unheard.

According to NCRB data, India loses one student to suicide every hour. Behind every statistic is a story of exhaustion, loneliness, or societal pressure stories that deserved a different ending.

The Debate: Deepika Padukone as Mental Health Ambassador

Deepika Padukone, who has bravely spoken about her own depression, was recently appointed as a national mental-health ambassador. Supporters hail her openness for normalizing conversations around mental health. Critics, however, argue that celebrity campaigns without strong policy and counselling infrastructure can become symbolic gestures rather than solutions. Awareness must translate into action more counselors, accessible therapy, and crisis support.

  • “Every 22 days, we lose a dreamer. Let’s not stay silent.”
  • “Awareness is the first step, but access is the cure.”
  • “Talking about mental health shouldn’t be brave it should be normal.”

The Unspoken Truth

Gen Z is living through a paradox hyperconnected, yet emotionally isolated. The pressure to perform, to look perfect, to belong, often hides deep mental wounds.

As Deepika Padukone herself a survivor and now a mental-health ambassador once said, “Depression is not a sign of weakness. It means you have been strong for too long.” But beyond celebrity voices, India needs systemic support more counselors in colleges, accessible therapy, and public compassion.
