Teen Dead, 11 Students Injured After Slab Collapse at Tuition Centre in Navi Mumbai

A tragic incident unfolded in Koparkhairane when a portion of a building slab collapsed during a tuition class, leaving one teenager dead and at least eleven other students injured. The accident has once again raised serious concerns about the structural safety of residential buildings used for commercial activities such as private coaching classes.

According to officials, the incident occurred on Thursday evening inside a residential building in Sector 2, where a private tuition session was underway. Several schoolchildren had gathered in a ground-floor room for their regular class when a part of the slab from the upper floor suddenly gave way and crashed down onto the room.

Panic spread immediately as debris fell on the students seated below. Residents in the building and nearby areas rushed to help, while emergency services were quickly alerted. Rescue teams from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation and the local fire brigade arrived at the scene and began pulling trapped students from the rubble.

One teenager, believed to be around 13–14 years old, sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead after being taken to the hospital. Eleven other students were injured, though most reportedly suffered minor to moderate injuries. They were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, and their condition is said to be stable.

The tuition teacher present at the time of the collapse also sustained injuries but was later discharged after receiving medical care.

Authorities have since evacuated the building and begun a structural inspection to determine the cause of the collapse. Initial reports suggest the building was over two decades old, raising questions about maintenance and whether proper structural audits had been conducted.

Officials from Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation stated that an investigation is underway to examine the building’s structural integrity and to determine whether negligence or unauthorized modifications may have contributed to the accident.

The tragedy has sparked concern among parents and residents in Navi Mumbai, particularly about the growing number of tuition centres operating from residential flats without formal safety checks. Many have called for stricter monitoring of such facilities to ensure children are not put at risk.

As investigations continue, the incident stands as a stark reminder of the urgent need for regular structural audits and stricter compliance with safety regulations in older residential buildings.
