Karnataka Plans Social Media Ban for Children Under 16

In a significant move aimed at protecting young users online, the government of Karnataka has announced plans to restrict social media access for children below the age of 16. The proposal was revealed during the 2026–27 state Budget speech, highlighting growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on young minds.

The state government said the proposed restriction is intended to address the rising problem of mobile phone and social media addiction among children. Officials believe limiting early exposure to social platforms could help reduce excessive screen time, protect mental health, and improve children’s focus on studies and offline activities.

Authorities have also raised concerns about online safety risks, including cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate content, and the psychological pressure created by social media environments.

If implemented, the policy could significantly affect how teenagers in Karnataka access popular platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat. The proposal may introduce age-based restrictions or verification mechanisms to limit access for users under 16.
