What to Do Immediately When a Fire Starts

Raise the Alarm

  • Shout “Fire! Fire!” to alert everyone nearby.
  • Activate the fire alarm (if available).
  • Call the Fire Brigade: 📞 101 (or 112 for general emergency).

Try to Extinguish Small Fires (Only If Safe)

  • Electrical fire: Use a CO₂ or dry chemical extinguishernever water.
  • Oil or kitchen fire: Turn off the gas supply and cover the flames with a lid or wet cloth — do not pour water.
  • If the fire grows quickly, evacuate immediately.

Evacuate Safely

  • Close doors behind you (if possible) to slow the spread of fire.
  • Help children, elderly, or disabled persons exit first.

If You’re Trapped Inside

  • Go to a room with a window and shut the door.
  • Seal gaps under doors with wet cloth to keep out smoke.
  • Signal for help by waving a bright cloth or using a flashlight.
  • If smoke fills the room, stay low and move near a window.

After Evacuating

  • Do not go back inside for belongings.
  • Check for injuries and help others if you can.
  • Report to building security or authorities about anyone trapped inside.
