Every winter, Navi Mumbai transforms its wetlands, creeks, and coastal marshes light up in soft shades of pink and coral as migrating flamingos arrive. This natural phenomenon, often called the “pink season” or more informally, the city’s “Flamingo Festival” renews each year with fresh flocks of graceful birds, delighting residents, bird-watchers and nature lovers alike.
What’s Happening
- In early December 2025, the first major flock of greater flamingos landed at Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, with about 300 birds spotted a hopeful start to the season.
- Early sightings were also reported at DPS Lake in Nerul, a favourite haunt in Navi Mumbai for flamingo-watching.
- As the season progresses (typically between November and March, peaking January-April), wetlands across the region from marshes, creeks to mudflats become arenas for birds migrating from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other distant habitats.
Where to See Them
Some of the best locations to witness the flamingo spectacle:
- Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary vast mudflats and mangroves, home to huge flocks. DPS Lake, Seawoods (Nerul area) much loved by local bird-watchers and easily accessible from the city.
- Wetlands and creeks near Karave, Airoli, Nerul, Seawoods and other coastal zones ideal for sunrise or evening spotting, often peaceful and photogenic.

Why It Matters More Than Just a Pretty Sight
- Flamingos act as bio-indicators their regular migration and presence signal healthy wetlands and functioning ecosystems.
- As filter-feeders, they help maintain the ecological balance of mudflats and wetlands by feeding on algae and tiny invertebrates, and through sediment-stirring (bioturbation), they support aquatic life and overall wetland health.
- Their return encourages increased awareness about conservation. It reinforces the need to protect wetlands such as DPS Lake, Thane Creek and other marshes especially as climate change, development pressure and pollution threaten fragile coastal ecosystems.
For Residents and Visitors: Tips to Enjoy the Flamingo Season
- The best time for viewing is early morning (around sunrise) or late afternoon / sunset when flamingos are often active and light is beautiful for photos.
- Try visiting Thane Creek Sanctuary, DPS Lake or coastal wetlands near Nerul / Seawoods / Airoli these are among the most reliable spots.
- Respect the habitat avoid loud noises, avoid littering, keep a safe distance from birds so as not to disturb them.
