Mamdani: The Internet’s Mayor Who Outsmarted Cuomo (and Trump, Too)

If New York politics were a reality show, Zohran Mamdani just won the grand finale. On November 4, this 34-year-old democratic socialist became the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of the Big Apple defeating a former governor and proving that brains, charm, and social media can beat old-school politics.

How did he do it? First, he talked about what actually matters free bus rides, rent freezes, city-run grocery stores, and universal childcare. Forget vague promises; Mamdani gave New Yorkers something they could actually tell their neighbors about.

Then came the social media magic. Dubbed the “internet’s mayor,” Mamdani’s team posted candid TikToks, rap remixes, and even Hindi videos. Yes, you read that right rap + rent control = viral genius. Gabriella Zutrau, his Instagram wizard, made sure memes and videos racked up thousands of views, DMs, and probably some jealous campaign managers.

He didn’t just charm locals. Mamdani also increased youth turnout, spoke to skeptics, and stuck to facts even when billionaires poured $40 million to stop him. Authenticity, it seems, really does pay off.

From door-to-door grassroots to Instagram reels, Mamdani’s campaign proves one thing: modern politics is part policy, part meme, all strategy. And somewhere, Andrew Cuomo is probably refreshing Instagram… again.
